The body of an adult jellyfish consists of a bell shaped hood enclosing its internal structure and from which tentacles are suspended. Each tentacle is covered with cells called ‘cnidocytes’ (a type of venomous cell unique to the phylum ‘Cnidaria’), that can sting or kill other animals.

This is thanks to a tissue known as mesoglea. it is generally transparent, although it may be brown, purple or even patterned in various ways. Some species can even be bioluminescent, meaning they are animals that produce their own light.
The name for the Jellyfish comes from the fact that they have a jelly like elastic in the middle that is called Mesoglea. This is between the outer layer which is the Epidermis and the inner layer which is the Gastrodermis. The Jellyfish body consist of over 95% water.
An example of the polyp form is found in the genus Hydra, whereas the most typical form of medusa is found in the group called the “sea jellies” (jellyfish). Polyp forms are sessile as adults, with a single opening (the mouth/anus) to the digestive cavity facing up with tentacles surrounding it.
