The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engined, turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s.
The German navy’s 3rd Naval Air Wing (MFG3) training detachment at RNLNAS Valkenburg in The Netherlands took delivery of the first P-3C CUP Orion on 28 February 2006 and only four months later, on 22 June 2006, the eighth and final P -3C was delivered to Naval Air Sta-tion Nordholz.

Lockheed P-3C Orion is a four-engine propeller aircraft used as a submarine hunter and for surface surveillance. The P-3C is a land-based, long range anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrol aircraft. It has advanced submarine detection sensors such as directional frequency and ranging (DIFAR) sonobuoys and magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) equipment.
In order to at least partially cover the range of tasks of this aircraft type in the transition phase, the German ministry of defence wants to keep the two MLU P-3C’s 60+03 and 60+04 in operational service until their planned end of service life in 2025.
