Curtiss-Wright, perhaps best known as the manufacturer of the legendary P-40 Warhawk fighter plane, was the largest aviation company and the second largest company in the world (behind only General Motors) during World War II.
11 Οκτ 2022 · The design of the P41 was more lethal and powerful than previous fighter aircraft used by the United States Air Force. Engineers added two extra feet onto its frame, which made it look sleeker and longer in contrast to its portly predecessors.
The fighter is believed to be a P-40E piloted by John Blackburn when it crashed into the lake on a gunnery training flight on 28 April 1942, killing the pilot. His body was recovered from the aircraft, which was submerged in 20 feet of water.
23 Ιαν 2024 · The 4th Fighter Group was activated on 12 September 1942. Based in Debden, England, it was made up of the three Eagle Squadrons of the Royal Air Force (No. 71, No. 121, and No. 133).

P-40s engaged Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor and in the Philippines in December 1941. They also served with the famed Flying Tigers in China in 1942, and in, The P-40 was the United States' best fighter available in large numbers when World War II began.
