Continuing Education Period: Your current 5-year Act 48 compliance period. If your period is longer than 5 years, a legislative extension may have been applied. More information on the details of specific extensions can be found on our FAQ page. Required Hours: A total of 180 hours is always required for Act 48.
Beginning July 1, 2000, Act 48 of 1999 requires persons holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification to complete continuing education requirements every five years to maintain their certificate status as active whether employed or not.
Online Learning. Online Courses for PaTTAN offers several course options online that are self-paced and interactive. Participants of online courses may receive credits in the form of certificates of completion, Act 48 hours or some other type of format.
Act 48 of 1999 requires all Pennsylvania educators holding Pennsylvania public school certification (including Instructional I and II, Educational Specialist I and II, Administrative, Supervisory, Letters of Eligibility, and all vocational certificates) to participate in ongoing professional education.
Members can earn Act 48 hours (PSEA is an approved Act 48 provider by PDE) and Chapter 14 verification to submit for district consideration toward the fulfillment of annual hours for HQT. PEARL: PSEA’s hub for online learning programs.
Act 48 requires the satisfactory completion of continuing professional education every five years. These requirements can be met by completing one of these options: 6 credits of collegiate study (One credit is equivalent to 30 hours in the classroom.)
