The objective of this project is for students to design and build the tallest free standing tower using only discarded newspapers and paperclips. The tower may NOT be attached to the floor.
Tallest tower and Longest bridge are similar activities and challenge pupils, working in groups of 3 or 4, to create structures from a single sheet of A4 paper, the tallest free-standing tower and the longest possible span between two end supports, respectively.
In the process, students formulate the basic engineering principles of tower design. This exercise provides students with an opportunity to use model-building as a way to help understand the forces and phenomena at work in the world around them.
Construct the tallest tower using just 10 sheets of paper. Setup - 2 mins Challenge - 15 mins. This project aims to develop the engineering and mathematics skills of students by allowing them to engage in a fun way with these concepts. It can also be used to foster teamwork as students can work together to construct the towers.
TSW design and build a tower to specs. TSW reflect on and evaluate their approach to the problem and the strategies they used to address it. TSW evaluate their comfort level with on-site design challenges. TSW continue brainstorming strategies to help them be successful at on-site design challenges in the future.
