'Patmore' is a vigorous, pyramidal tree with a strong central leader, ascending branches and a symmetrical, rounded crown. 'Patmore' is very similar in appearance to F. pennsylvanica 'Marshall' (also known as 'Marshall's Seedless').
'Patmore' is a vigorous male, seedless tree and is considered to be superior to many Green Ash cultivars, including 'Marshall's Seedles'. An unattractive ash flower gall (formed by mites) can develop on male flowers and persists into winter.
Fraxinus pennsylvanica is a medium-sized deciduous tree reaching 12–25 metres (39–82 feet) (rarely to 45 m or 148 ft) tall with a trunk up to 60 centimetres (24 inches) in diameter. The bark is smooth and gray on young trees, becoming thick and fissured with age. The winter buds are reddish-brown, with a velvety texture.
One of the best general purpose shade trees for cold climates; extremely hardy, very clean and tidy with a symmetrical rounded shape and glossy foliage, seedless, adaptable to almost any conditions; popular and justifiably so.
Most authorities now lump these two types of ash into a single species, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, with a the common name of Green Ash (Dirr, 1998).
