9 Μαρ 2018 · Morning personality Jonathon Brandmeier pioneered a clean comedy legacy worthy of an entirely separate discussion and was one of the first to be successful at a talk/music format. The rest of WLUP’s lineup became household names: Patti Haze, Bobby Skafish, and all the rest were familiar voices to young people all across the city and suburbs.
I had such a moment myself recently on the unexpected news that a legendary radio station of my adolescence, WLUP 97.9 FM “The Loop” in Chicago is no more. It’s not possible to overstate the importance to Chicago lore The Loop had, and by extension American culture.
Initially the station ran jockless with a wide playlist under the direction of Bill Gamble. As time went on the playlist was trimmed down and AOR veterans Bob Stroud (along with his famous "Rock 'n Roll Roots"), Patti Haze, Joe Thomas and Mitch Michaels joined on.
Gentile hosted a radio program when he felt like it, while WJJG’s format was a combination of brokered talk and adult standards. This was convenient because Gentile moved WJJG’s studios to an apartment inside a complex he owned on St. Charles Road in Berkeley, known as “Villa Gentile”.
