According to historical period, sonata began to imply a formal plan of movements as well as the structure within a single movement, e.g. sonata form. In general usage as a work title, it designates a multi-movement piece for solo or duo instruments with one of the instruments enjoying a feature role.
This is a list of the works of the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895–1963). Das Marienleben, Op. 27, song cycle for soprano and piano, based on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, which exists in two versions. It was from this ghastly situation that composer Paul Hindemith (whose wife was partly of Jewish ancestry) had to flee, initially to Switzerland, and ultimately to the USA and a teaching post at Yale University in 1940.
