It's not a cost issue. It's more of an engineering issue. The engine shares lubricant with the transmission, and that steers me away from synthetics because that PC800 transmission and clutch was not designed for synthetics. I agree that clean good quality oil is vital. Look for the starburst symbol.

How reliable is this bike? How much is it going to cost to operate? Am I comfortable riding this bike? Can I haul around the passengers and/or cargo that I want? Can I ride the distances that I want on this bike or will I get too fatigued? The PC800 checks all of these things for me.
You could change your oil twice as often and still be money ahead. I just play it safe and use full or semi synthetic motorcycle oil in the PC since it dosnt cost much for the small amount of oil it is.
