Iran and Lebanon have diplomatic relations, with embassies in each other countries. Since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the two countries have deepened relations amidst controversy in Lebanon and abroad.
Iranian influence in Lebanon dates to the 16th century and has grown considerably during the 20th century, first minimally under the Shah through the interchange of elites, specifically in Beirut and then significantly following the Iranian Revolution and Iran's training and funding of Hezbollah.
11 Οκτ 2010 · Iran’s 1979 revolution transformed relations with Lebanon and politics within Lebanon, especially after Tehran sired Hezbollah in 1982. Iran now considers Hezbollah its primary Lebanese interlocutor, followed by the Shiite community, and only then the state.
27 Ιουλ 2023 · June – Iran dispatched more than 1,000 Revolutionary Guards to Lebanon after Israel’s June 6 invasion. Iranian forces supported the formation of Hezbollah, a Shiite militia, but never directly confronted Israel. The invasion also strengthened ties between Iran and Syria.
1 Μαρ 2007 · Several chapters set out the Iranian involvement in the sociopolitical awakening of Lebanon's Shiites, personified by the Iranian cleric Musa al-Sadr and epitomized by the emergence of first Amal and then Hezbollah. But the chapters treating earlier years and other subjects should not be skipped.
The most virulent offshoot of Lebanese-Iranian relations today indelibly marks the Middle East: Hizbullah. But, Iran and Lebanon have touched each other's fortunes, on religious, political and cultural levels, for over 500 years.
13 Δεκ 2022 · After the Six-Day war in 1967 Lebanon became embroiled in four decades of proxy wars against Israel by Palestinian, Syrian, and Iranian backed forces. The assassination of Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in 2005, and the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon soon thereafter, paved the way for Iranian influence.
