21 Οκτ 2024 · The Japanese attack of the Philippines on December 8, 1941, came at a time when the U.S. military buildup had hardly begun. Their advance was rapid; before Christmas, Manila was declared an “open city,” while Quezon and Osmeña were evacuated to MacArthur’s headquarters on Corregidor Island.
2 On December 8, 1941, just hours after having attacked the United States’ fleet on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese army turned their attention toward another American stronghold, the forces stationed on the Philippines. Here the Japanese attacked Clark Field, an American airbase on the island of Luzon.
The February 1945 liberation of Manila by MacArthur’s forces, which most hoped would at long last bring an end to the years of fear and misery, instead only compounded the tragedy. In the only urban battle of the Pacific War, American forces fought block-by-block, home-by-home, and even room-by- room.
The 23-minute ceremony ended the Pacific war, which had started on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. It also ended nearly four bitter years of Japanese occupation in the Philippines—a war that shattered the Pearl of the Orient and killed approximately one million civilians.
