A physician assistant or physician associate (PA) is a type of healthcare professional. While these job titles are used internationally, there is significant variation in training and scope of practice from country to country, and sometimes between smaller jurisdictions such as states or provinces.
The PA profession was created to improve and expand healthcare. The concept was lauded early on and gained federal acceptance and backing as early as the 1970s as a creative solution to physician shortages.

Joyce Nichols is the first woman to be formally educated as a physician assistant (PA). She also happens to be the first African-American woman to practice as a PA. Nichols was working as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Duke University when Dr. Eugene A. Stead, Jr. established his 2-yr PA educational program in 1965.

Ms. Nichols was in the third Physician Assistant class at Duke, a program that had been strictly attended by men. In 1970, she was the first woman and the first black women to graduate from the Duke Physician Assistant Program, making her officially the first African-American female PA anywhere.
