This work presents a qualitative study designed to investigate to what extent Thought Experiments (TEs) can be used effectively in teaching basic concepts of physics theories of the 20th century to students in the upper secondary education.
In this article, a simple thought experiment from the history of physics is used as a basis for a student project in a physical-science course. The results for student learning were positive. The history of physics provides a rich source of ideas to inspire similar learning experiences.
