Sharps and Flats. How to Read Sheet Music. If you’ve looked at the lesson on Getting Started then you will now know how to read sheet music for the white notes (otherwise known as the naturals) on a piano/keyboard. However, we need to also know when to play the black notes.

From any white key, the black key immediately on the right will be a sharp note. The alphabet note is sharpened by a half step. For example, from note C, the black key immediately beside it on the right is “C sharp”:

These charts show THE MOST USUAL guitar tabs for each piano staff note- what is known as FIRST POSITION (where the left hand's 4 fingers naturally lie when finger 1 lays in fret 1, finger 2 in fret 2, etc.).
Sharps (#) raise a note by one step (clockwise.) Flats (♭) lower a note by one step (counterclockwise.) Some notes sound the same but have different names, depending on how we reach them! Enharmonic Equivalents are their name if you want to show off! 👉 Now, up to Tones & Semitones!

To reiterate: A sharped note, such as G♯, is a ½-step higher than its un-sharped version (G). To play G♯, first find G, then play the next-highest note.
