The Houston Pilots Association provides pilotage services to all foreign flag vessels and American vessels under register (regulated vessels) entering or departing the Port of Houston, Harris County, Texas, as required by Texas state law.
The following Navigation Safety Guidelines represent the collective experience and judgement of the state licensed Pilots for Harris County ports and have been developed to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels on the Houston Ship Channel and its navigable deep draft tributaries.
For the past 100 years the Houston Pilots have taken on the responsibility of guiding ships that arrive and depart in the Port of Houston. The Pilots operate 24/7, and currently have a fleet of 4 pilot vessels. The Houston Pilots provide pilotage for the entire length of the Houston Ship Channel.

On May 22, 2021, the Houston Pilots (“Pilots”) marked 100 years as the state licensed pilots responsible for protecting the people and environment on the narrowest, busiest commercial waterway in the world.
11 Νοε 2020 · The 52-mile Houston Ship Channel is home to the largest petrochemical complex in the country and the largest container port in the Gulf of Mexico. Houston ranks first in U.S. exports and first in U.S. foreign tonnage.
30 Οκτ 2023 · There are currently two station boats (or bar boats) operating to enable Pilots to board ships in a safe, time-efficient manner. For a Pilot boarding a vessel, utilizing the ladder is a highly hazardous move.
