Abstract. This article discusses pitch perception, beginning with a brief introduction to the function of the auditory system. It considers what limitations there are on our ability to extract frequency information from the sounds reaching our ears, and provides an orientation for some of the mechanisms described in the later sections.

Pitch is essentially the perceptual correlate of waveform periodicity, or repetition rate: The faster a waveform repeats over time, the higher its perceived pitch is. The most common pitch-evoking sounds are known as harmonic complex tones.
Pitch is a crucial aspect of most music: sequences of pitches form a melody, and simultaneous combinations of pitches form harmony—two foundations of Western music. Pitch is not a physical property of any sound or sound source, but rather, it describes an aspect of the sensation that sound can induce in us, making it a psychological variable.
Operationally, pitch is defined as the frequency of a pure tone to which a sound is matched. Since pure tone pitch changes very slightly (0-4%) with large changes in sound pressure level (40 dB), the level of the reference tone also has to be specified.
