Pittosporum are a good choice for hedging in milder parts of the UK with their bushy, dense, evergreen growth. Naturally compact cultivars are great for low hedges and as alternatives to traditional box (Buxus).
Pittosporums are naturally bushy growing plants, so require minimal pruning if grown as a shrub, tree or informal hedge. Simply prune off any leggy growth to keep the plant more uniform. If you are growing your Pittosporums as a semi-formal or formal hedge, occasionally lightly tip-prune the plants to make them bushier.
As a general guide, 60 cm between the plants is the ideal spacing for a Pittosporum crassifolium hedge. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can move the spacing to 50 cm. However, going wider than 60 cm will have two impacts on the hedge.
