PlantCARE, a database of plant cis-acting regulatory elements and a portal to tools for in silico analysis of promoter sequences Magali Lescot , Patrice D hais, Gert Thijs, Kathleen Marchal, Yves Moreau, Yves Van de Peer, Pierre Rouz and Stephane Rombauts
Regulatory elements are represented by positional matrices, consensus sequences and individual sites on particular promoter sequences. Links to the EMBL, TRANSFAC and MEDLINE databases are provided when available.
This resource is designed to provide an overview and a brief evaluation of various bioinformatics tools useful for promoter analysis and cis-element searches for beginners like us. The emphasis is to explore useful tools for the analysis of Arabidopsis gene promoters.
A database-assisted system, PlantPAN (Plant Promoter Analysis Navigator), for recognizing combinatorial cis-regulatory elements with a distance constraint in sets of plant genes and enables other regulatory features in a plant promoter, such as CpG/CpNpG islands and tandem repeats, to be displayed.

PlantCARE is a database of plant cis- acting regulatory elements, enhancers and repressors that offers a link to the EMBL entry that contains the full gene sequence as well as a description of the conditions in which a motif becomes functional.
