Pleural pressure, or Ppl, is the pressure surrounding the lung, within the pleural space. During quiet breathing, the pleural pressure is negative; that is, it is below atmospheric pressure. The pleura is a thin membrane which invests the lungs and lines the walls of the thoracic cavity.

In the upright subject, it is more negative in the apices, and less negative in the bases. Within the thoracic cavity, the lungs are separated from the thoracic wall by the visceral and parietal pleurae.
Airway closure occurs when pleural pressure exceeds airway pressure (ie, transpulmonary pressure is negative). Airway closure during tidal breathing occurs when the closing volume is greater than end-expiratory lung volume or closing capacity is greater than FRC.
The pleura (derived from the Greek word for side) is a membrane of fibrous tissue containing a single layer of mesothelium. It aligns the interior of the thoracic cavity and is arranged into 2 layers, parietal and visceral, that are continuous at the hilum of the lung via the pulmonary ligament.

18 Σεπ 2016 · Any theory for pleural pressure needs to explain certain crucial facts, including that the lung and chest walls exert an equal and opposite recoil pressure . It would need to explain the negative values for pleural pressure, and why apical pleural pressure is more negative than at the base.
