The report by NITI Aayog provides insights into India's multidimensional poverty index for 2023, highlighting significant progress and challenges.

Based on the latest National Family Heath Survey [NFHS-5 (2019-21)], this second edition of the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) represents India’s progress in reducing multidimensional poverty between the two surveys, NFHS-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21).
Monetary poverty measure refer to 2019 ($2.15 a day), 2019 ($3.65 a day), and 2011 (national measure). A headcount ratio is also estimated for two other ranges of poverty cutofs. A person is identified as vul-nerable to poverty if they are deprived in 20–33.33% of the weighted indicators.
The National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023 provides multidimensional poverty estimates for India’s 36 States & Union Territories, along with 707 administrative districts across 12 indicators of the national MPI.
Based on these estimates, 16.4 percent of the population in India (230,739 thousand people in 2021) is multidimensionally poor while an additional 18.7 percent is classified as vulnerable to multidimensional poverty (263,030 thousand people in 2021).
