The Constitution of Bangladesh declares Islam as the state religion. Bangladesh is the fourth-largest Muslim-populated country. Muslims are the predominant community of the country and they form the majority of the population in all eight divisions of Bangladesh.
In terms of religions preferred by the population, we see that Muslim comes in with 89.1% of the population, Hindu with 10%, and other religions make up the remaining 0.9% (includes Buddhist, Christian) of the population.
Based on United Nations Data 2020 figures for population (164,689,383) and land area (130,170 km 2), Bangladesh has the highest population density among large countries, 1265 persons per square kilometre, and 10th overall, when small countries and city-states are included.

Although the country is largely homogeneous, there is diversity among indigenous peoples in areas like the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and North Bengal.
