Port Leon is across the St. Marks River on the Old Florida National Scenic Trail. You have three ways to get there. (1) Go to the edge of the river and call to a boat or hire one to take you to the other side.
"A small boatworks in Newport built invasion personnel landing craft during World War II. The entrance to the Saint Marks Wildlife Refuge is located across the bridge from Newport, with the road winding through the refuge to the Saint Marks Light built in 1836."

Thousands of cotton bales from south Georgia and north Florida were shipped from these ports. Port Leon, created in 1837, was located on the east side of the St. Marks River, about two miles below the confluence of the Wakulla and St. Marks Rivers and downstream from St. Marks and Magnolia.

St. Marks River State Park which opened in 2007, is the 161st Florida State Park, located about 10 miles east of Tallahassee, south of U.S. Highway 27. The park's 2,589 acres occupy parts of Jefferson and Leon counties and act as a buffer from development for the St. Marks River .
