First, the Market Revolution—the shift from an agricultural economy to one based on wages and the exchange of goods and services—completely changed the northern and western economy between 1820 and 1860.
Over time, these economic, social, and political changes began to separate North and South. While the North became an industrialized, highly interconnected region that traded vigorously with the West, the South was left out and became more and more reliant on cotton and slaves.
Following the end of the Civil War and into Reconstruction era (1865–1877), the South experienced economic devastation. Some states that relied less heavily on the plantation system managed to fare better following its downfall. [13]
