First, the Market Revolution—the shift from an agricultural economy to one based on wages and the exchange of goods and services—completely changed the northern and western economy between 1820 and 1860.
Over time, these economic, social, and political changes began to separate North and South. While the North became an industrialized, highly interconnected region that traded vigorously with the West, the South was left out and became more and more reliant on cotton and slaves.
Economic differences played a vital role in escalating tensions during the Pre-Civil War period. The North was rapidly industrializing, fostering a wage labor system and attracting immigrants, while the South remained dependent on agriculture and slavery for its economy.
