Pregnancy testing may be offered to women of child-bearing age in the preoperative setting, as elective surgery is generally avoided unless absolutely necessary in pregnant women due to the risks of teratogenicity and miscarriage. Pregnancy testing is usually performed using a urine test, but a venous blood test may also be used.
