This map shows the territorial expansion of Germany between 1935 and 1939, that is, before the beginning of the Second World War. The process started in 1935, when residents of the Saar region, which had been ruled under a mandate by the League of Nations since the Versailles Treaty, decided to join Germany after holding a popular referendum.

After WWII, all territorial increases were canceled, and pre-war Germany territory was divided into British, French, American, and Soviet occupation zones. Germany’s former eastern lands were given to Poland and the USSR.
This republic included territories to the east of today's German borders. The period of Nazi rule from the early 1930s through the end of the Second World War brought significant territorial losses for the country.
