The prevertebral fascia extends medialward behind the carotid vessels, where it assists in forming their sheath, and passes in front of the prevertebral muscles. It forms the posterior limit of a fibrous compartment, which contains the larynx and trachea, the thyroid gland, and the pharynx and esophagus.

28 Φεβ 2017 · This review provides an overview of comprehensive knowledge regarding the anatomy of the fasciae and fascial spaces of the maxillofacial and the anterior neck regions, principally from the standpoint of oral surgery, whose descriptions have long been puzzling and descriptively much too complex.
The prevertebral muscles are most easily seen on the right in the dissected specimen, though the longus capitis, rectus capitis lateralis, and rectus capitis anterior have been cut across. The cut ends of these can be seen on the base of the skull, or the entire muscles can be exposed on the left by displacing the left half of the pharynx.
The deep layer of the deep cervical fascia, also known as the prevertebral fascia or sometimes the perivertebral fascia, is a tubular sheet of connective tissue which forms the largest compartment of the neck – the vertebral compartment.
