Definition. Properly basic beliefs are foundational beliefs that do not require justification from other beliefs or evidence to be considered rational. They serve as a starting point for further belief formation and are often held without needing to be proven or supported by other arguments.
Beliefs that are properly basic, in that they do not depend upon justification of other beliefs, but on something outside the realm of belief (a "non- doxastic justification"). Beliefs that derive from one or more basic beliefs, and therefore depend on the basic beliefs for their validity.
