Psalm 139 Introduction: 1) Whenever I teach Bible interpretation I always encourage my students to ask two very important questions of the passage they are studying: 1) What does this text teach us about God? 2) What does this text teach us about humanity? When those two questions are applied to Psalm 139 the simple answer is, “a lot!”
There are three key ideas set forth in the psalm. The first is God's intimate knowledge of the psalmist (Psalm 139:1,2,4,6,14,23 (twice)). Second, God searches man's ways as a judge scrutinizes evidence that is brought into court (Psalm 139:1,3,23-24).
Psalm 139:13. Verse 13 states “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.” This verse speaks of God’s sovereignty and His active involvement in the formation and conception of every individual. It highlights the idea that God is present and involved in every aspect of our lives, even before we are born.
