Castle Hill basin lies 90 kilometres north-west of Christchurch, in the eastern section of the Southern Alps. The distinctive rock outcrops that characterise the area occur in parts of the Thomas Formation limestone, shaded grey on adjacent map.
Located in the Canterbury region. The grand limestone rock battlements of Kura Tawhiti led early European travellers to name the area Castle Hill. Climbers, families, students, scientists and travellers have always been drawn to this spectacular place, to explore its natural, cultural, historic and recreation values.
14 Ιαν 2019 · How To Get To Castle Hill From Christchurch. Car: The best way to complete this day trip. Once you get out of the city centre, you simply head through Riccarton until you reach the turnoff for SH 73 (clearly marked). From here, you stay on the road until you reach your first stop.
Check out this 3.0-mile loop trail near Sheffield, Canterbury. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. This is a very popular area for hiking and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
