1. Use pd.Index to name an index (or column) from construction. Pandas has Index (MultiIndex) objects that accepts names. Passing those as index or column on dataframe construction constructs frames with named indices/columns.
The axis labeling information in pandas objects serves many purposes: Identifies data (i.e. provides metadata) using known indicators, important for analysis, visualization, and interactive console display. Enables automatic and explicit data alignment. Allows intuitive getting and setting of subsets of the data set.
The MultiIndex object is the hierarchical analogue of the standard Index object which typically stores the axis labels in pandas objects. You can think of MultiIndex as an array of tuples where each tuple is unique.
Index labels (the labels assigned to rows of the data) are always present in both Series and DataFrames and can be accessed through the .index attribute (e.g., my_dataframe.index), and column labels are always present in DataFrames and can be accessed through the .columns attribute (e.g., my_dataframe.columns).
Set the DataFrame index (row labels) using one or more existing columns or arrays (of the correct length). The index can replace the existing index or expand on it. Parameters: keyslabel or array-like or list of labels/arrays.
