Some have rare recurrences and some have frequent outbreaks. Antivirals such as Acyclovir can be taken daily to help prevent recurrences or taken in multiple doses at onset of outbreak to shorten duration.

I used to get them quite often in the past (4-6 times per year). The only thing that truly works for me is prescription antivirals. I got them from my dermatologist and you have to take them as soon as you feel one starting, but they have always gone away quickly once I take the medicine. Good luck!!
