Diffraction is a process by virtue of which a system of waves spreads out after passing through narrow gaps. The system of waves includes sound waves, light waves, electromagnetic waves, water waves, etc. Diffraction, in general, is the bending of waves around a small aperture.
Diffraction is the spreading out of a wave as it passes through a small gap. This occurs most when the wavelength of the wave and the gap are similar in size.
Today, physicists applying x-ray diffraction use an instrument called a diffractometer, which helps them compare diffraction patterns with those of known crystals, as a means of determining the structure of new materials.
In this lesson, we will learn how to describe the interference patterns produced by waves that are diffracted by passing through gaps and traveling different distances.
Diffraction is the bending of waves around obstacles or openings. When light waves encounter an obstacle in their path, they are scattered and spread out. This is called diffraction of light. There are many examples of diffraction of light. One of the most famous is the diffraction of laser light.
Interference and Diffraction. 14.1 Superposition of Waves. Consider a region in space where two or more waves pass through at the same time. According to the superposition principle, the net displacement is simply given by the vector or the algebraic sum of the individual displacements.
