19 Αυγ 2021 · The glossy, leathery, medium to dark green, six-inch leaves emit a spicy fragrance when crushed and the inconspicuous, springtime flower clusters are followed by small, dark blue fruits which ripen in fall. These fruits are enjoyed by birds and squirrels and add to the tree's overall attractiveness.

The tree produces a dark blue spherical fruit. This tree can be found naturally in dunes, hammocks, maritime forests, and sometimes in the sandy soils of the barrier islands. The bark of the Persea borbonia is reddish-brown with irregular furrows that separate flat-topped ridges.
Persea borbonia or redbay [3] is a small, evergreen tree in the laurel family , native to the southeastern United States. It belongs to the genus Persea , a group of evergreen trees including bays and the avocado.
Fruits: A distinctly stalked drupe, to 1 cm, green, ripening to blue; seen from late summer into fall; reportedly browsed by deer and turkey. Habitat: A rather common Florida tree that is found in various habitats, including marsh edges, hammocks, and sandy soils, it ranges west on the coastal plain to Texas and north to Virginia.
Come spring, red bay puts out small, inconspicuous white-green flowers that produce a fruit, technically called a drupe, that goes from green to blue to nearly black when ripe. They're food for wild turkeys and songbirds, black bears and white-tailed deer, who also munch on the foliage.
