This fact sheet was produced to help in the identification of common bay trees found in Florida by using the dichotomous key below. This key focuses on those features that are present year round. Following the key, a basic description, along with photographs, of each species is given to help with the identification process.
19 Αυγ 2021 · The densely-foliated, spreading branches create a lush, billowly, rounded canopy making Redbay a wonderful shade tree. It can make a nice street tree planted on 20 to 25-foot centers but be sure to prune it properly as mentioned above.
Landscaping. Recommended Uses: This and other bays are being attacked by a fatal disease (laurel wilt disease). Avoid spreading this plant, it is best not to plant this or other bays. Considerations: Subject to laural wilt, which is spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle. Do not move dead wood.

Tree Search. Florida has a great variety of native trees, more than any other state in the U.S. other than Hawaii. Over northern Florida, particularly in the western section, many of the trees that range widely and are well known over the eastern U.S. find their southern limit.
The topside of the leaf is dark green and shiny, while the bottom side is a silvery white color with an orange tinge from pubescence that occurs primarily along the mid vein; distinguishing it from red bay, which lacks this rusty color and concentrated pubescence.
15 Μαΐ 2018 · Redbay trees produce a shiny, dark blue, oblong drupe (one seeded…well…99% of the time). It’s only about a ½ inch in size maturing between September and October. Sweetbay’s fruit on the other hand mature between July and October, is about two inches long, looking more like the cone of a pine tree.
