For every note in the chromatic scale there is a relative major key and a relative minor key. Let’s have a look at an example. Have a look/listen to this performance of a G major scale and its relative minor – E minor:

As we’ve seen, the E natural minor uses these same notes, except that the sixth note of the major scale becomes the root note of its relative minor. The formula for forming a natural (or pure) minor scale is W-H-W-W-H-W-W. “W” stands for whole step and “H” stands for half step.

So from E, we go up one half step to F, a second half step to F#, and a third half step to G: E > F > F# > G
