There are two types of icing: rime formation and clear ice formation. Rime ice (opaque, rough-skinned frozen particles) forms when droplets freeze rapidly upon striking the leading edge of wings and other exposed parts of the airframe.
Icing, in general, is any deposit or coating of ice on an object, caused by the impingement and freezing of liquid (usually supercooled) hydrometeors; to be distinguished from hoarfrost in that the latter results from the deposition of water vapor. The size of droplets affects the rate of catch.
Rime ice typically accretes along the stagnation line of an airfoil and is more regular in shape and conformal to the airfoil than glaze ice. It is the ice shape, rather than the clarity or color of the ice, which is most likely to be accurately assessed from the cockpit.
Rime Ice – white, porous, opaque, brittle and rough, so disruptive to airflow. This occurs at low temperatures (< -10°C) and/or low liquid water contents, as under those circumstances the released heat during the freezing process can be transported immediately to the environment.
Structural ice distorts the air flowing over the wing. This diminishes the wing’s ability to produce lift and reduces the angle of attack for maximum lift. Ice also adversely affects airplane handling qualities and significantly increases drag.
