In dogs, about 70% of ringworm cases are caused by the fungus Microsporum canis, 20% by Microsporum gypseum, and 10% by Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In young or debilitated animals and in Yorkshire Terriers, infection may be persistent and widespread.
The most predominant fungus that can cause ringworm is Microsporum canis, which can affect the superficial layer of hair, nails, and skin. Medically, ringworm is defined as dermatophysis, which is characterized by round or irregularly shaped markings.

General information and causes. Despite its name, ringworm is not actually a worm and it isn't always ring shaped! It's a fungal infection that causes raised, crusty, hairless patches of skin, often in a ring-like pattern. Ringworm doesn’t only infect dogs.
Ringworm can be transmitted quite easily to humans, especially young children, and it is important to take appropriate steps to minimize exposure to the fungus while the dog is being treated. Ringworm is more likely to be transmitted to and cause clinical signs in humans who have a depressed immune system.
