27 Αυγ 2024 · The GP40 and GP40-2, along with the non-turbocharged GP38 and GP38-2, were EMD’s most successful second-generation Geeps. As with earlier models they fit exactly what railroads were looking for while also featuring the manufacturers’ excellence in quality and reliability.

Built by General Motors Diesel/Electro-Motive Division, the EMD GP40-2 (Dash-2) is a four-axle road switcher diesel-electric locomotive evolution of GP40 series. By the early 1970s, many first generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives.
2 Μαρ 2014 · So, why would a railroad buy an SD40-2 instead of a GP40-2? The performance is identical above 20 mph, but below that, the SD40-2 can haul more - up to 50% more. If you have a relatively flat RR and you want to run fairly fast freight, you'd buy GP40-2s.
This included an engine water-level sight glass on the right side of the body (a feature common to all EMD Dash 2 models), a larger electrical cabinet air filter box, a lengthened battery compartment on the left side, and a slightly modified cab.
Offered as a high horsepower, fast freight locomotive, GP40's were right at home on the head end of fast merchandise and TOFC (trailer on flat car) trains. 1,221 GP40's were built, with Chessie System and Penn Central having the largest fleets.
The EMD GP40-2 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division as part of its Dash 2 line between April 1972 and December 1986. The locomotive's power is provided by an EMD 645E3 16- cylinder engine which generates 3,000 horsepower (2.24 MW).
