Merton‘s anomie and strain theories sought to explain why certain cultures, groups, and individuals were more prone to engage in antisocial and/or illegal behaviors. Merton asserted that members of society receive messages of what is normal—including acceptable behaviors—from societal institutions.
The sociological theories mobilized in this course attempt to parse out why people engage in deviant behavior, how they become deviant, how certain behaviors and characteristics are defined as deviant and the consequences of being labeled as deviant within a society.
