Notice? It took only two years to build the SDF-2 (from 2012 to 2014) but EIGHT years to build the SDF-3(2014 to 2022). Heres my theory why. They spent considerable resources building the SDF-2 and after it was destroyed, it took eight years of scrounging to find the resources necessary to build its successor.
One feature built into the SDF 1 + 2 was the ability to merge with the Armour Platforms for increased firepower. The Macross attempted to link up with two of the ARMD during the initial attack, but the smaller vessels were easily overwhelmed and destroyed by the superior alien forces.
In Robotech, the SDF-2 was a duplicate of the SDF-1 constructed on Earth. The intention was that it was built at the site of the SDF-1's final landing spot (in the little lake). The original Macross anime didn't have this depicted, so there's no visuals in the show to indicate this.
