In November of 2020, a freak wave came out of the blue, lifting a lonesome buoy off the coast of British Columbia 17.6 meters high (58 feet). The four-story wall of water was finally confirmed in February 2022 as the most extreme rogue wave ever recorded at the time.
More recently, a rogue wave slammed into a cruise ship in the Southern Ocean, shattering windows and injuring several passengers, one fatally. However, it remains unclear how common rogue waves actually are. One study based on media reports captured just 210 rogue waves worldwide between 2011-2018, but the real number is thought to be much higher.
