It is his gracious purpose to grant his aid to all who truly love him. (2) the desires which he excites in the heart of the Christian are those which are according to his will; they are such as God wishes to exist; the contrite, humble, and penitent pleading of sinners for mercy. (3) he superintends and guards Christians in their prayers.
God is waiting because he desires that all would repent. He “takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked” (Ezek 33:11) and pleads with sinners to receive his mercy (Isa 55:1–11; 65:1–5). Peter portrays repentance as a destination that God’s patience allows sinners to reach (cf. Rom 2:4).
Peter meant well when he told Jesus to avoid the cross, but Jesus responded to Peter with these strong words: you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men (Matthew 16:23). b. The Mosaic Law cannot set us free from sin and death (Romans 8:2; cf. ch. 7) because its only appeal is to the basic nature of man. It urges us intellectually to obey God, but it does not provide sufficient power for obedience.
So that God, whose is the Spirit, and who is acquainted with the mind of the Spirit, knows what he means when he leads the saints to express themselves in words, desires, groans, sighs, or tears: in each God reads the language of the Holy Ghost, and prepares the answer according to the request.
