In 1985, promiscuous Dallas electrician and rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and told that he has about 30 days to live. At first, he refuses to accept the diagnosis until he remembers having unprotected sex with a prostitute who was an intravenous drug user.
Woodroof was said to have lost all his friends after they found out he was HIV-positive. The movie Dallas Buyers Club depicts Woodroof as holding homophobic views prior to contracting HIV. Other people who knew Woodroof said that he did not harbor anti-gay beliefs and was openly bisexual .
In 1985 Dallas, Texas, Ron Woodroof received news that would change his life forever: he was diagnosed with AIDS. Doctors said he had thirty days to live; however, with little help from mainstream medical institutions, he managed to live another seven years.
Ron Woodroof was an unlikely hero, but he rose to the occasion and became a lifeline for many people with AIDS in the Dallas area. Ron created the Dallas Buyers Club in 1988 to get HIV and AIDS medication to those in need who couldn’t legally get it from doctors and pharmacies.
