RULES REQUIRING CITATION TO OFFICIAL REPORTS. “New York decisions shall be cited from the official reports, if any.” (CPLR 5529 [e].) “Where New York authorities are cited in any submissions, New York Official Law Report citations shall be included, if available.” (Rules of Ct of Appeals [22 NYCRR] § 500.1 [g].)

Note: a lot of law is regulatory driven, mainly because each legislature does not have the time to micro-manage and legislate each agency's rules.
When citing to statutes, provide the specific statutory citations (e.g., RPL § 401(b)(3), not RPL§ 401). Please provide complete and accurate citations to both statutes and cases, which is particularly important relative to unreported cases or those found only in obscure reports.
