This page outlines a number of tips for combat mechanics to help you increase your DPS during manual play. This includes how auto attacks work, 4-tick auto attacking and cancelling abilities and ending with an explanation of affinity.
Auto-attacks, also known as basic attacks, are attacks which are periodically fired off automatically during combat. While abilities are distinct from auto-attacks, the two systems do interact with each other.
From a lot of DPS guide I've heard that you should use an auto attack after Death's swiftness/Sunshine/Berserk. Mage auto is simple enough since you can just press the ability, but is there a way to do the same for range/melee rather than just clicking on the enemy with your mouse?
Go to settings -> Controls -> Cycle target forwards. I have it bound to z. Then, go to your secondary action bar and bind a copy of the basic auto attack to x. Just alternate between the 2 keys and your character will automatically target and attack a new foe, and with auto retaliate and revolution it's pretty afk. Archived post.
However, with DW you can use auto attacks losslessly (is that a word) after using defensives/sunshine/deathswiftness. Basically you don't need to do anything extra, you use a defensive or ult and you automatically fire off an autoattack before you can even use another ability.
