Now that you have been admitted to Rutgers–New Brunswick, you will need to take placement tests to determine your preparedness in a subject area (math, English, world language). The placement tests serve a different purpose than standardized exams and tests in school.
THE PROGRAM. The three majors currently offered by SCILS are communi-cation, information technology and informatics, and jour-nalism and media studies. Each major leads to the degree of Bachelor of Arts.
Now that you have been admitted to Rutgers University-New Brunswick, you will need to take placement tests. These tests are designed to provide information about your incoming knowledge, placement tests are not pass/fail. Results will be used to help place you in the courses appropriate for your level.
Rutgers (NB) uses the ALEKS PPL (McGraw-Hill) placement test, part of an adaptive learning platform widely used by universities nationwide. Each take of the test allows you up to 3 hours to submit up to 30 open-ended (not multiple choice) questions.
To be placed into Precalculus in your first term at Rutgers, you must demonstrate competence in basic math and Algebra I and II. To be placed into Calculus, you must demonstrate competence in all four areas, including Precalculus. Rutgers Placement Testing Exemptions. See Exemptions (PDF).
