Dramatic poems are lyric poems that are meant to be read aloud to express the feelings and emotions of the reader. Can you figure out what emotions the narrator is expressing in each of these lyric poems? Try reading some of these poems out loud to see if you share their emotions.
1. Anonymous, ‘Fowls in the Frith’. We begin our whistle-stop tour of the lyric poem in the thirteenth century, a whole century before Geoffrey Chaucer, with this intriguing and ambiguous anonymous five-line lyric: Foulës in the frith, The fishës in the flod, And I mon waxë wod; Much sorwe I walkë with. For beste of bon and blod.
A Few Fun Examples. In each of these lyric poems, the poet is expressing their emotions about something: In the shape poem “ Pizza, Pizza, I Love You ” the poet shares their feelings of love with their favorite food. In the poem “ Zoom Gloom ” the poet complains about how bored they are with remote learning.
