Just five miles away from the highest peak in SoCal - San Gorgonio - San Bernardino tops out at a respectable 10,649 feet. Hiking from Angelus Oaks, this 15-mile out-and-back trail climbs over 4,700 vertical feet. It makes for a very long day hike or a great weekend backpacking trip.
The San Bernardino Mountains are a high and rugged mountain range in Southern California in the United States. Situated north and northeast of San Bernardino and spanning two California counties, the range tops out at 11,503 feet at San Gorgonio Mountain – the tallest peak in Southern California.
At 10,649 feet (3246 meters), San Bernardino Peak is quite a landmark. The standard route is via the San Bernardino Peak Trail starting at the Angelus Oaks trailhead. From Angelus Oaks trailhead (5,960') to the summit of San Bernardino Peak is 7.9 miles with 4700 feet of elevation gain.
Peak Elevation: 10,629′ Elevation Gain: 4,689′ Difficulty: Strenuous. San Bernardino Peak does not receive as much attention as San Jacinto Peak, Mount San Gorgonio, and Mount Baldy. Yet, the trail has everything you want in a great altitude training hike: serious distance and elevation gain.
