The hike from Vivian Creek is reasonably hard and shaded for the first 2/3 up, then very strenuous and unshaded the last 1/3 up.
The climb up to San Gorgonio is long, but so so worth it. It is a rite of passage for any Southern California hiker, and it is the perfect training hike for some of the higher peaks in the Sierra. A wonderful hike all around! (Once you get back to the car, of course!).
I set my sights on the highest peak in southern California - San Gorgonio. The hike would be a long one at 18.5 miles featuring 5400 feet of climbing over those miles. Those numbers didn't concern me too much but the altitude did - San Gorgonio stands at 11,503 feet.
Video and turn-by-turn directions to do the most popular San Gorgonio hike up Vivian Creek, including permits, parkings, and insider tips.
I made it to the summit of San Gorgonio (11,503ft) yesterday. That is awesome! The sign has been through some serious weather. It appeared to have split through the middle and repaired with braces. Great job. Did you take Vivian Creek trail? That one is a doozy of a day hike.
Lower trail is very beat up from the rain a few months ago but there were some volunteers out cutting trees. 10/10, took about 4 hours round trip for the 19 miles / 4,600ft of ascent. Packed only 1L of water with the intention of filtering if I needed to, but ended up deciding to just jog the way down instead.
